Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
453 AM PST Thu Dec 26 2024
.SYNOPSIS...26/319 AM.
There is a slight chance of showers for San Luis Obispo and Santa
Barbara Counties tonight through Friday and again on Sunday,
otherwise dry weather is expected through New Years Day. Periods
of gusty winds are expected today through Friday and again from
Monday into New Years Day.
&&
.SHORT TERM (TDY-SAT)...26/346 AM.
Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected today, with highs in
mid 60s to mid 70s. Temperatures much warmer than yesterday due to
a broad ridge building over the Pacific Ocean to the west of the
region. Highs will be a couple degrees cooler on Friday, due to
the passage of a weak frontal system. Then Saturday temps will
bump back up to the mid 60s to mid 70s, as the high pressure
center nudges closer. Low clouds and fog will be possible for
coastal areas overnight into the morning hours Friday and Saturday
mornings, especially for LA and Ventura Counties.
The aforementioned front will move over the Central Coast late
today into Friday, bringing a chance for light showers for San
Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties. Rain totals are likely to
be low, with widespread totals under 0.10 inches (locally up to
0.25 inches may occur for NW San Luis Obispo County). For Ventura
and Los Angeles Counties, measurable rain is not favored with
this system.
Areas of gusty northerly winds will persist today through Friday.
Winds will be the strongest for the Santa Barbara SW Coast,
higher terrain, the I-5 Corridor, and the Antelope Valley. Please
see the latest Non- Precipitation Weather Message (LAXNPWLOX) for
further details.
.LONG TERM (SUN-WED)...26/316 AM.
On Sunday a dying front will bring a very slight chance of light
rain for northwestern San Luis Obispo County. Otherwise and
elsewhere dry conditions are expected well into next week.
Periods of gusty northerly winds will continue for portions of the
area, including the Central Coast, higher terrain, and the I-5
cooridor south through Santa Clarita and the western San Fernando
Valley. Winds are favored to peak Monday and Tuesday when strong
north-to- south surface pressure gradients and upper level winds
are likely.
Offshore flow will prevail Monday onward next week, offering a
good chance of mostly sunny skies. Temperatures will be largely
above normal Sunday and Wednesday, in the mid 60s to low 70s.
Monday and Tuesday, lower 500 mb heights and a cooler airmass will
lead to a cooling trend, especially away from the coast, with
most temperatures in the 60s.

some MVFR cigs are likely north of Pt. Conception late tonight as
a weakening frontal system moves into the area. There is also a
chance of light rain in northern sections.

weekend, but will be elevated thru the period, and will get close
to SCA levels at times.
For winds across the outer waters, a Gale Warning remains in
effect for the southern zone (PZZ676) through this evening.
Following this, SCA level winds are likely thru early next week.

.BEACHES...26/449 AM.
A large and long period west to northwest swell will bring
high surf to the beaches of the Central Coast and to Ventura
County beaches thru the weekend.
Surf of 10 to 15 ft is expected much of the time thru Sun on
Central Coast beaches, with surf of 7 to 11 ft on VTU County
beaches. However, there may be brief periods when surf drops
slightly below High Surf Advisory levels in both areas.
On west-facing beaches of L.A. County and west-facing points on
the south coast of SBA County, elevated surf of 4 to 6 ft is
expected thru the weekend. There is a 40% chance that surf will
reach High Surf Advisory levels at times in these areas Fri-Sun.
Nuisance to minor coastal flooding may continue to affect beaches
on the Central Coast and Ventura County Coast at times thru the
